Description
Hazelnuts belong to the family Corylus avellana L. In the USA they are known as Filberts. The nuts should be from the present season's crop, unless stated otherwise at point of sale. The nuts are gathered by hand in managed woodland. They are mid to deep brown in colour. There is only one crop a year. At the beginning of the season (October), they are soft and sweet. At the end of the season (August to October), they become more crisp and woody textured with a sharper flavour.

Packaging
Hessian or polypropylene, 25 kg stitched or sewn sacks. Markings include year of crop, lot eg. 5-24, size eg. 9 mm, certifying body (Ecocert in Turkey), & UK 5, Soil Association symbol 1422.

Physical Examination
There should be a maximum of one piece shell per 5kg. There should be a maximum of 1% broken/ severe damaged nuts per sack.
