The Orange River region of South Africa, an isolated and dry area close to
the Kalahari Desert, is perfect for growing vine fruit. They get their
sweetness from the long hours of hot sun and succulence from the river's
water.
119 smallholder farmers from the Eksteenskuil region, which is situated over
several large islands on the river, have organised themselves into the
Eksteenskiuil Farmers Association. These farmers benefit directly from sales
of the raisins and sultanas in the form of an added levy.
